Q&A: Walt Disco
Ahead of their gig at McChuills in Glasgow on Friday 26th April 2019, we got to know Walt Disco...
Who are Walt Disco?
Walt Disco are a band whose influences derive not from just music itself, but much more so from love, glamour and androgyny. Crooning vocals, angular guitars, dark shimmering synths - their music is a gateway to a space of lust, loss and everything in-between.
Q&A
Describe your sound in 3 words.
YOUNG, HARD AND HANDSOME.
Favourite venue you’ve ever performed?
Even though we’ve loved lots of well-run small venues, I think a sold out Electric Ballroom supporting Sports Team has taken the edge in my eyes. It was mad!
Favourite hang outs in Glasgow?
We’ve just moved to Dennistoun so we’re trying to check out nice places round here. The pub Redmond’s and that new coffee shop Mesa are nice. Other than that, we love McChuills, Mono, Nice & Sleazy’s, and even though its my place of work I still enjoy having a tin in the Priory.
Describe your ideal festival line up.
Funnily enough I just did that Festify thing that everyone is doing. It wasn’t far at predicting my ideal festival lineup, from past and present. I got David Bowie, The Associates, David Byrne, The Blue Nile, The Ninth Wave, Lana Del Rey, St. Vincent, Sparks, Lucia, The Orielles, Bjork, James Blake, Crack Cloud, The Twilight Sad, Gang of Four, Sophie, The 1975, Queen, Catholic Action, and a few others. I’d pay a lot of money to go to that festival!
If you could have dinner with anyone in music past or present who would it be, and why?
About a week ago I was told about Klaus Nomi and I’ve been fascinated by him ever since. Sadly, he died in the early 80’s due to complications from aids. A dinner with him would be very interesting as well as weird. Would love him to teach me some opera.
Is there anything that you can’t go on tour without?
Finlay's glasses.
How do you feel to be headlining a YALA Records night in Glasgow?
Very excited, we loved DJ’ing at the first night that Catholic Action headlined and meeting Felix and Mo. We’ve been playing lots of shows recently so we'll be nice and warmed up.
Are you a fan of the label and the acts they’ve put on shows with previously?
They have such a great roster, and we’re lucky enough to be friends with some of the bands they’ve released previously such as whenyoung and Feet. We’re also big fans of Yak and we’re really excited about Talk Show, who are joining us on support at our McChuills show.
