Scottish Spotlight with Bonnie Kemplay...

Scottish Spotlight with Bonnie Kemplay...

Meet Edinburgh-born singer/songwriter Bonnie Kemplay...

Crowned by tastemakers BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge as the UK’s top breakthrough artist last year, Bonnie Kemplay is on a journey to stardom in 2023. Shortly after being signed by record label Dirty Hit, Bonnie has been making waves in the global music scene – opening for 15-time Grammy Award winner Adele at her BST Hyde Park show, and more recently for indie rock sensations The 1975 across their UK & Ireland tour.

1. Tell us a bit about your latest album ‘running out of things to say, running out of things to do’?

'It’s a collection of songs I wrote between ages 17 to 20. The music is a mix of guitar centred acoustic songs and alt-indie full band arrangements. I wrote mostly about my relationships with people and with myself.'

2. Do you have any advice for artists trying to break into the industry?

'Trust your artistic vision and stay true to yourself. Get involved in your local music scene and make friends!'

3. Best gig you have played in Scotland to date?

'Cameo Habitat's first headline gig at the Opium club in the Cowgate. I also played drums in CH when I was sixteen; it was a cool alt-indie project that was more upbeat and fun than the music I was making. That show went off, and all of our friends came so was really lovely!'

4. Your go to song when you're connected to the aux?

'For ages it was ‘Never Really Over’ by Katy Perry, but then I discovered ‘Love you like that’ by Dagny which NRO ripped. They both go hard! Although maybe NRO is better? So either depending on if I’m feeling team Katy or Dagny that night.'

5. Where do you see yourself in five year’s time?

'On a remote Scottish Island in a cabin, writing my third album and eating loads of snacks.'
