This story was written by John Harold Johnson, pen name 'Ronnie Sill'. A storyteller and writer from Shetland, he was one of the founders of the Shetland Folklore Society. This story, John writes, was told to him when he was a young boy in the 1930's by his aunty, the very narrator herself. Now told by Marjolein Robertson, a storyteller and comedian from Shetland. The story of the Hillswick Wedding is one of Shetland's best folktales. It takes the listener back to life in Shetland in the late 1800s, exploring the crofting, fishing and traditions. Yet there is more to this story than meets the eye, as through it we meet the trows, a creature of Shetland folklore, and with them we go into their very world. This story has been told for generations, each corner of Shetland having their own version, but none as rich and as detailed or as beautiful as the Hillsook Wedeen. Storyteller Marjolein specialises in Shetland folklore and history and has toldstories inthe BBC Fringe Festival tent, The Scottish Storytelling Centre, Mezrab in Amsterdam, An Lanntair in Lewis and Mareel in Shetland. Marjolein performs stories both in person and online on the platform Twitch where she performs Storytime With Marjolein as a Twitch partner.
