Q&A: Patawawa

Q&A: Patawawa

Ahead of their gig at The Poetry Club on Wednesday 11th December, we got know Patawawa...

Where did your band name come from?

It was born of two dogs seriously going at it... I'll say no more.

Describe your sound in 3 words.

Indie Tinged Disco

What music did you listen to growing up?

I (Beth) listened to a lot of E.L.O, Super Tramp, Black Sabbath courtesy of the household record collection with a few choice CD’s by the Spice Girls, Miss-teeq and Destinys Child… my musical education didn’t happen until I was a bit older. Rorys always been a discohead but with some teenage indie vibes thrown in with Metronome and Late of the Pier. It is well documented that sam rejected all music except the Artic Monkeys from the year 2002 to 2009.

Tell us the inspiration behind your latest track 'That Guy'...

‘That guy’ has a bit of split personality because I interpreted Sams verse lyrics completely differently to how he intended them. The song is about going out and your’e chatting to a girl and your’e trying to be a smoothy but you’re just not that smarmy guy. I, on the other hand, I thought it was about when a bloke won’t stop trying it on with you, and calling you, you know when they’re ‘that guy’. The whole debacle was very confusing.

Favourite Glasgow hang outs?

I’ve never been to Glasgow despite all my mums side of the family being from there. So if anyone wants to get in touch tell us where’s good to go! I don’t think the boys have either.

Favourite venue you’ve ever performed?

So far… gotta be the good ol’ Leadmill in our fave city of Sheffield, but we’ve got a pretty good feeling about The Poetry Club.

If you could have dinner with anyone in music past or present who would it be, and why?

Kinks front man Ray Davies, I love him! It’s a cliche but his lyrics were so tongue in cheek yet relevant, and still are now. He is also incredibly handsome… yes still.

Is there anything that you can’t go on tour without?

Having a KFC

Tell us about your most memorable gig…

I think the Tramlines last year was pretty memorable! I remember thinking wow that’s a lot of people, worrying that I may piss my pants with nerves and then it was just the best gig ever. Everyone was so into it, dancing and going crazy, and  dry pants luckily!

If you could have one song on repeat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Million Dollar Bill - Whitney Houston. Its a banger to practice vocals to, its a banger to dance to and that bass line sends shivers down my spine. Love it Love it Love it.

Any exciting plans for 2020?

2020 is going to be a calamitous action packed adventure as per usual. First gig of the year we are jetting off to Tokyo for a couple of gigs which its quite frankly nuts! We have some gigs in the pipeline with funky house legends Kraak and Smaak, as well as releasing  a slinky little number at the end of Feb. So for anyone looking to get involved with a bit of disastrous disco madness, give us a shout!!
