2. What was the inspiration behind your November piano solo tour?

It’s been a really long time since I did a tour like this and now felt like the right time to do it again. I’ve been writing new music for most of this year and have had time to reconnect with the piano again in a delicate way. I want to see my fans again. I want to spend time with them in a calm and intimate setting and be able to chat and laugh and just be together! I hope the gigs will feel more like a chilled evening together than a formal performance experience.

3. What are you looking forward to most when you come to Glasgow?

The first thing that sprung to mind was the prospect of walking up and down your amazing hilly streets! I love the grid layout of Glasgow city centre.

4. Think back to your childhood, what was the first music/song that you responded to?

My Mum and I used to sing So Long, Farewell from the Sound of Music together before sleeping apparently. Most of my memory of this is her telling me about it to be honest. She said I was singing even in my cot so I must have been tiny. I do remember looking up at her singing that song and every time I hear it, it feels like the most familiar thing in the world.

5. What’s your favourite track to perform from ‘Someone Out There’?

I had a new favourite each night of the tour if I’m honest. Dancing with Character always stirs big emotion though and seems to develop every time I perform it. Do It is eternally satisfying to play and sing. It will always be a fun moment in any set list and that makes me happy.

6. If you could have dinner with anyone in music past or present who would it be, and why?

I’d love to have dinner with Joanna Newsom. I actually have no idea what she’s like as a person but I love her music and the story telling in her songs so I’m guessing that she’d be really entertaining at the dinner table too. I once saw her in a cafe in Beachwood Canyon in LA. It was like seeing a real life fairy!

7. Is there anything that you can’t go on tour without?

I’ve got into the habit of making sure there’s a She-Wee bottle in the van/ car/ bus! I’ve not yet used it but I drink so much water on tour that I always need the loo on long drives and I’m so scared of getting stuck in traffic. It’s become a lucky charm now. There’s no going back.

8. What do you enjoy most about being a musician?

I love that you can immediately find a connection with a stranger. It’s a language and a world that you can bond over. Just like football and football fans. You don’t have to know the theory or technical stuff, you can still have a great conversation despite different levels of knowledge and language.

9. What’s next for you after the piano tour?

Alongside this tour I’m making good progress making new music. I might even try out a couple of new songs on this tour - it’s really interesting trying out new songs in this kind of setting. So after the tour, I’ll probably be straight back into the studio. It’ll be nice to get some fresh air for a couple of weeks before burying myself away again!

10. Tell us about your top moment of 2019 so far?

Coming out of the studio in March to perform for Comic Relief was an emotionally high-octane experience! I was nervous and full of adrenaline and it was great. Live TV feels special because you're part of a moment in history and playing a tiny part in Comic Relief’s positive work felt meaningful.
